I've often wanted to strangle the developer who created this dialog. Even when I don't lose work, the annoyance of having it pop up every few minutes is maddening.
If you're happily typing away on that 370 page dissertation or that flirtatious e-mail to your girlfriend and you happen to press the spacebar or Enter just as this baby pops up, you may just kiss your work goodbye. The XP one is by far the worst of the two because, as you can see, the "Restart now" button is selected by default. In that case, I predict the chances are virtually 100% that you've been annoyed more than once by the restart reminders pictured below. If, like roughly 90% of computer users, you run Microsoft Windows, you hopefully have Automatic Updates enabled. So does anyone know what causes Windows update to get stuck like this? Why does it think a restart is pending but then does nothing when restarted? I've run the microsoft fixit 50202 even with aggressive mode which does not solve the problem.
Windows update troubleshooter doesn't find any problems.
System file checker doesn't find any problems. I've deleted the SoftwareDistrobution folder which does not solve the problem. When Windows starts back up the same message is present in the Windows update panel. There is no attempt at installing or configuring updates. The problem is that on the Windows update page shows the message "Restart your computer to install important updates." If you click on check for updates it will show: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates because you must first restart the computer so that a previous installation can be completed."Ĭlicking on the restart button just restarts Windows normally. I've seen it enough times that I would really like to find a solution other than doing a fresh install each time. I'm sure everyone has seen this problem several times.
